History

The National Pan-Hellenic Council at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was established March 26, 2003 to serve the Historically African-American fraternities and sororities. Since 2003, April 19 has been recognized as NPHC Day at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The purpose of NPHC shall be to foster the cooperative actions of its members in dealing with matters of mutual concerns. Active chapters are on the full NPHC Chapter list.

The establishing Leadership Council included Sheldon Hutchinson of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. (President), Jaron Cannon of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Vice President), Jerry Washington of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (Treasurer), and Treasurer Ballard Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (Secretary). Dwight Mosby of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was instrumental in establishing the Council's charter, who co-advised the organization with Amber Shavers. Judy Webster was the UNL staff member assigned to work with the council.

Scholarship

Scholarship is important to all NPHC affiliate organizations. The minimum cumulative grade point average for all NPHC affiliate organizations is 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Please check with the individual organization of interest for specific details about membership requirements.

Value

Becoming a member of an NPHC organization is an invaluable experience. Membership benefits include great social networking, lifetime friendships, building of character, leadership skills, community outlook, professional development and event planning.

Networking

All of the NPHC member organizations have local, regional and national conferences that allow members the opportunity to network with various members of their organization, locally and across the country. It is important to continue the bonds of brother/sisterhood by attending conferences and supporting fellow chapters.

Community Service

As a council, NPHC participates in several service projects throughout the cities of Lincoln and Omaha. Past service projects include: March of Dimes, The Big Event, Relay for Life, Dates Making a Difference (Date Auction), Sleep Out for the Homeless, Safe Quarters for the Friendship Home, Baby Shower for Stork's Nest, and volunteered at Nebraska Aerospace Museum.

Alumni Support

Membership in an NPHC organization is a lifelong commitment. Each NPHC member organization has an alumni system that supports and develops its collegiate members. Alumni members provide wisdom, an instant social network, and serve as positive role models in the transition through collegiate life and beyond.
